Drive by's

No matter if I'm making a quick run to the market for eggs, or on my way home from an appointment, I love to take spontaneous detours into the local neighborhoods and drive by the houses. Its what I commonly refer to as "drive by's". I'll study paint color choices and landscaping, or lack there of. And in my mind, I seem to remodel almost each one, and picture what I would do with it if it were my home.

There's one house in particular that I seem to drive by the most. Located in a quiet, homey little seaside town, this house seems to know my name, cause it calls at me from miles away. I first discovered this little house on our way to one of our favorite little breakfast joints. One of those little hole in the wall restaurants, where the food is impeccable, there's always a wait, and the locals come hungry.

Such a modest little thing, this is just the sweetest, tiniest house. White paint accented with gorgeous aqua blue trim. Beautiful rose bushes in the yard graced with a sweet white picket fence. When I look at it, I can picture in my mind scenes of my life playing out inside of this house, it's just that sweet. Sure there are plenty of larger, prettier and more modern homes aplenty everywhere you look, but like I mentioned before, this one knows my name, and it calls at me often.

One Sunday morning, we were on our way to breakfast and I asked Adam if he would pull over so that I could take a picture of the house, to which he hesitantly obliged. As I stood on the street with my camera, the owner pulled up in the driveway. A bit embarrassed, I explained to her that I adored her home, and asked her permission to photograph it from the street. Not only did she allow me to photograph it (as seen above) but she allowed us to come inside and take a look. She might as well have been Willy Wonka, inviting me into the Chocolate Factory for a firsthand tour. I thanked her countless times and walked away with a great big smile. And to this day, I will still find silly little excuses to drive by that house.

Oh, this house is so charming - even more so for me to oogle, as we have so much snow and it's so very cold here in Saskatchewan! It makes me think that Spring might just come, after all!

So sweet and charming!! I would be driving by it often too!
How kind that the homeowner invited you in -- was the inside decorated in a similar fashion? :)

Hi Jennifer, I recently discovered your blog and am enjoying it so much. Somewhere I have a list of my favorite things and a picket fence is one of them. I have got to know--was the inside of the house up to your expectations or was it a disappointment? How nice of the homeowner to let you in.

We often get caught up in todays materialistic way of life and we so often forget what makes a house a home. This little cottage looks like a home, not because of size or anything like that but because it is well loved it looks like the owners have poored their heart and soul into that lovely garden. I often look at friends lovely big new houses and for a minute I am jealous until I get home and realise that although their houses are impressive they lack the character of my home which we as a family have poored our heart and soul into. Thank you for reminding me.
Cheers Linda

Jennifer I was holding my breathe waiting for some inside photos, didn't matter though as you left it to our imaginations...what a wonderful story and I also have magical little cottages I go past just like the one in your photo, I think our home we live in now was a bit like that to me before we bought it....I'm not quite thinking it's so magical now if you know what I mean!!...p.s. I'm still clicking everyday!!

Oh Jennifer, that is such a sweet story. And what a sweetheart that lady is! I do hope she comes here and reads all the comments. -waves to her-

I have seen other 'drive-bys' but never seen one, where the writer was lucky enough to have the owner invite them inside. You are so lucky!

Well, you are so cute too. That I'm sure no one would worry about having you taking pics of their house. Especially when you told her you loved her house so.

Great entry! Thank you!

We are kindred spirits! My family hates it when a "drive by" makes me stop the car, and either stare at the house/garden or take a picture. It's so fun!!

Thanks for stopping by my blog, I have entered your name in my GIVE AWAY.

It is an adorable house. I love almost any home with a picket fence and flowers!

I'm a home stalker too. I even slow down to look inside at night if they have the curains open and the lights on! I can't help myself!

I know what you mean; sometimes the littlest houses with their attention to detail say 'home' more than any mansion could.

I do the same thing. I love to look at homes, sometimes when out Connie and I stop and do the same. Sometimes we get invited in and sometimes not. There are so many wonderful homes that have such heart, not like those McMansions they build today.

That is a sweet, precious house. Lucky you to be invited in. Come for a visit.

Hello Sweetie!

What a terrific post. As you might imagine, like you, I stalk and gawk. I'm not a fan of huge, new homes, I prefer older architecture surrounded by beautiful gardens. Homes that are quaint, charming and much loved almost always reflect the heart of the people who dwell within. You found yourself a "keeper!" Thank you for sharing it with us.

Much love,
Suzanne

What a pretty house. You're so lucky to have been able to go inside.

When I lived in Michigan, there was a home in the country that I'd often drive by, staring at longingly through the window for those few brief moments, until it was out of sight. It was a gorgeous pale yellow house with white trim. Absolutely perfect. I'd often ask my husband to drive real slow, if he was driving.

Many times, I wanted to stop and ask if I could peak inside. But I never had the nerve.

I regret not even taking a picture. {Although, I can still see it clearly in my mind.}

I love it! That is the front garden I dream of having. I hope to accomplish it, well somewhat, this spring. Thanks for bringing it to us.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only crazy lady standing out in front of someone else's home!

I love it when I here this story from other people. I do the same and have been invited into a couple of homes. People can be so sweet. I came to your blog because I wanted to thank-you so much for your cottage of the month! I look forward to it every month with excitment. You do such a wonderful job. I enjoyed the artical of you in Romantic Country as well. ( I think that was the one I forgot for sure.) Anyway last month in my blog I made mention to everyone that it was the 1st and to look at your cottage of the month. Do you mind if I do that the first of everymonth? Have a nice day and thank-you again for all of the work you do so we can have some eye candy!!!

Oh my gosh! I can't believe that! I thought I was the only one who did that. Too funny! I do this all the time. I have to drive by the homes I love, and I have to try and find new ones. I'm always studying, studying, to see how they've done it or what they've done. I love it! And on warmer evenings I will often park and just walk around a particularly good neighborhood so I can get a really good look. Ha! So glad to know I'm not the only one.

I do the exact same thing with a house not far from me. There is just something about it that says "HOME"...even tho I know, I would NEVER get a chance to own it. I've not gone inside...maybe someday!

I took 300 pics. This is the post to the houses I love to look at.

I have many others that inspire me just as the one above does for you and one day next week, I'll go take pics of those houses. I can see why you liked the house above. It looks like you and your airy touch on things. It is beautiful.
