In with the new

It was a thrilling New Years Eve at the Grey house last night. We were 30 seconds away from the stroke of midnight and the great big ball was about to drop, and my only thoughts were if Adam {my currently flu ridden husband} would make it through just long enough to celebrate it with me, or if I would be forced to dance around the bedroom with our two cats instead.

Adam's been sick for over week now with some kind of nasty flu that I am avoiding at all costs and so far I've not caught it yet. He's seen the doctor, he's taking meds, but this flu is some kind of serious force to be reckoned with.

And so this morning began with the usual routine...a cup of steeping hot tea with cream and cats puring against my legs, as I proceeded to read my email. That's when it got interesting. Apparently, January's Cottage of the Month is sparking some attention.

Some of you may remember when I posted about my desire to occasionally break away from the typical style homes I usually feature. Well, when my dear friend Becky introduced me to Waveney's home, I couldn't resist the opportunity. She lives in a gorgeous Tudor cottage, filled with Scottish antiques. And while it may not reflect my own personal decor, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate it and more importantly learn from it. An interior decorator for over 30 years, Waveney and her husband combined both their Scottish heritage and their love for dogs and have created a look in their home that is incredibly unique and different from anything I've seen before.

I'm not asking you to learn to play the bagpipes, adopt a scottie, or cover your white slipcovered sofas in plaid throws. Maybe just lend an open mind to things that may be different or unfamiliar than what you may be used to. You may be amazed at what you'll find!

Wishing all of you a Happy New Year,
Jennifer

44 of you had this to say:

  1. Hi Jen,

First of all let me say I hope you DH gets better very soon. It seems as though no matter who I speak with someone in their family or they themselves have this horrible flu. So I'm hoping DH feels better real soon.

Now, I have a comment on your Cottage of the Month. You work very hard to find, photo, crop, upload and post beautiful homes each and every month. It saddens me that people can't just stop by and appreciate all of your effort. If they don't like the cottage, they can click away and move to another site.

I just want to thank you personally for all the hard work and effort you put into bringing us these lovely homes. I enjoy seeing them no matter what the style. My mouth usually drops to the floor when I click on them, then I run to tell my friends to GO LOOK AT THIS HOUSE!!

Keep up the good work Jennifer.
YOU GO GIRL! and Happy New Year.

  2. I hope your husband feels better soon! My daughter has strep throat and I'm hoping I don't get it. I guess it's that time of year!

I really enjoyed looking at the January Cottage of the Month. It's not my style but I really enjoyed looking at her collections! I found it very beautiful and it's a very warm and cozy place which was perfect for January. Her attention to detail is amazing and I think you can still pull out ideas for decorating even if it isn't your style. She really has some beautiful things and has put them together so well!

You can't please all the people all the time so do what your heart tells you! You are doing a great job!

  3. Jennifer, First of all~ I just want to say Thank you for selecting this home as your cottage of the month! I think it is beautiful! I love the deep rich colors of the furniture, antiques, etc. I have been collecting for over 20 years and even though I love the look of the vintage white, I can't exactly change my house to that look! So, when I see someone like you select a house like this it makes me feel good and I know that my look still looks good! Also, that is what makes you good! You have an open mind to different looks even though they may not be what you would have in your home, you still know what looks good! Good for YOU!
    Hugs and Blessings for 2009,
    Yvette

  5. Oh poor Dear flu-ridden Husband! So sorry for him.

Best wishes for you to keep avoiding it, too. Seems that by now, you've beat it, since he's been spreading germs for over a week. Poor Dear...

Other than this, wishing you both a very Happy New Year.

And I'm anxious to see your Cottage of the Month. [Soon as I finish this comment, of course] :-) Even without yet seeing it, I applaud your willingness to show us a Tudor cottage, filled with Scottish antiques.

Of course, no one has to change their personal preferences, to view other styles of decorating.

Myself for one, would love your lots-of-white-ness. But since my husband is a woodworker and can't bear to see wood painted... And he supports me in every other little thing I want to do... I can't force white furniture on him. :-) So, looking at your decorating style is like a child, with nose pressed to the store windows at Christmas time. ,-) But I still love doing it.

What I'm trying to say [in my typical long-winded way] is that I fully see how we can appreciate being exposed to many different styles of decorating.

I'm in hopes that you'll be able to soon give us a Husband-Health-Update and it will be that he's on the mend.

  7. Sending well wishes to your husband. That must be an ugly old flu bug to keep him down for a week. Hope you stay free of it! I loved seeing January's cottage of the month. I enjoy each and every homes that you have featured. The January home had lots of warm colors and I found several ideas that I loved in her style. I see that she loves clocks too! I loved the way that she displayed several of them all together. Keep following your heart Jennifer! Thank you for bringing each and every home!
    Stay well!

  8. Happy New Year sweet friend! Please give Adam a get well wish from me. Tis no fun being sick this time of year. I have been drinking MEGA doses of Airborne in hopes of keeping whatever it is trying to set in my bones away.

Jennifer, thank you so much for sharing Wave's home with your readers. She is such a beautiful person and has wonderful taste! Having her as a friend is such an inspiration to me - and has been since 1988. Being in their home is just a treat and it is very warm and cozy - like wrapping yourself in your favorite sweater!
Their collections are unique and very European cottage style.

I personally love each home you feature - though some are not my style, I still appreciate all of the talent and heart/soul that is put into their decorating. We cannot expect everyone to be the same. Afterall, life would be very boring indeed!

    Love to you!

  9. Hi Jennifer!
Poor hubby! We both got flu shots this year and it seemed to work, neither of us is down with the flu! But don't YOU catch it!

I always look forward to your Cottage of the Month, and am on my way now to see something a little different! Thanks for putting these up monthly!
    Hugs, Heidi

  10. Hi Jennifer,
Happy New Year & hope hubby is better. I love your cottage of the month even though I decorate my cottage in a different style. This is what makes your cottage of the month so special because we get to see cottage styles of all different kinds through the eyes of the home owners. This cottage was very endearing and you can tell there is a love of home & man's best friend in this beautiful home! Thank you Jennifer for once again bringing us a charming home!!!

  11. I too hope your husband feels better soon!
I really enjoyed the cottage of the month. There is something to enjoy in each and everyone of them.
Keep mixing it up Jennifer, that is what makes it all so interesting!

  12. Dittos to hubby feeling better.

I am glad you featured this home- it seems perfect for those cold winter nights we are having- seems so cozy and warm. And there is so much to take and learn from the Waveney's home- the beautiful spindled cabinet above counter- placement and display ideas- even if it is not how someone else would decorate there is always take aways to be had if we look!

I too would love to have my home looking more shabby chic but DH has a say also - but I still come back to your site and others for so much inspiration!!!

  22. Hi Jennifer..

This house looks unique from the inside to the outside.Love to see the garden and the green grass. I still can remember the cottage of January 2007 the owner decorated the house mostly using enamelware.I love it and it looks unique too .
I should learn more about The Scottish Heritage because I only know the bagpipe.

  23. Hi Jennifer, I hate the flu! So far so good over here. As for the cottage of the month....I was glad to see a different look. I like the "old money" style of home. However, this one was a bit too dark and overly decorated for my tast. I live in Michigan and we don't have many homes dressed in cottagy white, so it was nice to see a different kind of decor. I am not a fan of a lot of "stuff" on the walls and so many chatske, doo-dads all over the place.
I really look forward to the cottage of the month and reading your blog. Take care and show your readers the inside of your new home soon!
By the way, chicken soup is always a comfort with the flu as well as hot tea!

  26. Jennifer,
Hoping your husband is feeling better by now! The flu is no fun!

And as for you January feature...I am with you...while some style may not reflect my own personal taste, I can always find something I enjoy in someone else's. I particularly found all of their dog collectibles so charming! Love those Scottish Terriers! And their backyard looked like heaven! Thanks again for seeking out different homes and styles to entice us with...you never know who will be inspired and from where, so it is so good to have variety. That is the spice of life after all!

  27. That's one thing I don't want to get sick. As you get older its really gets hard on you. Hoping at this time he's much better..

You know I enjoy the different styles of people's homes. I may not be my particular style, but it's still very appreciative to see other beautiful homes. I get excited every month not knowing what to see next. Oh and by the way when is yours coming up?

  28. Hi Jennifer,
I feel like I just visited an old Scottish Inn. Very charming, I love their backyard and anyone that has that many dog collectibles is wonderful in my book.

Great choice, nice to mix things up a big this month. The house truly looks warm and inviting.

  29. I love your Cottage of the Month and eagerly anticipate it each month. I was delighted to see this beautiful home; loved all the textures and soft colors, not to mention the tartans. And the yard; so green and beautiful. Becky did a great job of 'shooting it'!
While I can appreciate Shabby Chic, I would like to see more color.
Hope your Beloved is better soon...

  30. Jennifer,
All of the cottages you feature are beautiful. I particularly love the Scottish Cottage. I have a very hard time painting nice wood furniture. I love seeing the grain in wood! My sweety also loves wood! He is Scotch-Irish and German while I am mostly German, so I guess it is IN our blood! I would only change the dog collectibles to birds since I adore songbirds! Thank you so much for the tour!
    Blessings,

  31. Jennifer, I always check your cottages of the month and they are all fantastic. However, I do not decorate with shabby chic and white and pink. That doesn't mean I don't love to look at it, or gather ideas from the lovely homes. I was very intrigued by the home this month...loved the darker colors as I tend to some of that...please continue to show many styles of cottage...in fact, we in Arizona have "cottages" too!
It doesn't all have to be pastel to be beautiful! Keep doing your fantastic job!!

  34. I was a bit shocked to see the choice for this months cottage. I also find it strange that the only comments left were from people that say they liked it....hmmmm....well, I really didn't. It was too dingy and dark for my taste and not what I was looking for in a New Years "pick-me-up" But, we are all different and that's what makes the world go round and it is good to see how other people live and decorate even if it isn't my taste. I am eagerly anticipating next month! Viewing cottage of the month is like reading a magzine online - I love that opportunity - so thank you.

  35. Dear Heather {commentor above},
Even though our opinions may differ in some ways, I appreciate your honesty.

With the awareness of the leap of faith I was taking by choosing something so unlike all the other homes I've featured before, I too was suprised {but in a positive way} at how warmly embraced it has been by a majority of the viewers.

That said, I think next months feature will surely please any of those craving more white and bright, romantic and shabby chic style decor.

I saw the cottage and She has done a beautiful job decorating it!
as you say its not my style pink and fluffy but your right we need to look past the 'its not my style thing' and look at the technique and talent there.
We can always get ideas on how to display or showcase something and this months cottage really has such a talent for it, her home is beautiful and she deserves to be showcased!

  40. Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for featuring the beautiful home in January's Cottage of the Month. We aren't all pink girls, so its a nice change. Not to say that the pastel palaces and white wonderlands aren't great eye candy too, but there's lots of beautiful romantic homes out there and its nice to see them. Most importantly, the home reflects the taste and sensibilities of the owners and to me, that is what great decorating is all about, no matter what the style. Thanks for having such a fun place to come and escape the mundane chores for a little while.

All the best, especially to dear hubby (that flu can be really nasty),

  41. WOW! I just got back from the tour and must say this is one of my favorite homes ever. Like others, it is not what I would particularly have in my home, but everything was gorgeous. Their collections and antiques were displayed PERFECTLY. I FELT as if I were actually in Scottland or England.

I loved the use of the vintage swing arm drapery rods. I loved the bedding. And the staircase pic looks very familiar, were they in a magazine once? (A decorating mag, not Great Scots, lol!)

Their scottie collection is wonderful. I also loved their old canes, maps, family photos, and furnishings.

Makes me wanna curl up with a cup of hot tea and a plaid blanket!!

    Thanks so much for sharing,

  42. Hi Jennifer,
I hope by now the New Year has returned your hubby to good health and you are all well and warm. Thank you (and your guests)so so much for this great cottage blog & home tours. I am a longtime lurker who’s truly enjoyed all the cottages of the month. I must admit this is among my all time favorites! Like many,I find it fun to decorate in the various cottage styles - shabby pink n white is beautiful but only a part of who I am… Our old farm cottage has roses, chenille, toile, gingham, n polka dots alongside hounds, horses, damasks, tartans and tractor prints. Scattered fairies n tonka trucks complete the mix! (Our property and business actually have a Scottish name too- tho my Father is British & my Mother’s background is Swedish.)

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate all the time and effort that goes into these tours. It’s a fun treat to see unique and creative homes full of warmth and whimsy, regardless of exact style. I’m already eager for February’s surprises and will be back soon!

    hugs,
    Leslie
