Resurfacing

So my husband and I were at Home Depot a little while back, in their paint section (where else?) closely examining their Ralph Lauren paint chips. The entire conversation consisting of my asking Adam "Do you like this color, or this one here, or how about this?" This was our 4th visit to Home Depot that day, to their paint department, specifically.

Being that we had been painting for 3 days straight, I was wearing my "official" paint clothes, which consists of a mix of work out clothes and pajamas, further unfashionably layered lots of old paint. That I wore back in High School. The hair is up in a scrunchy, there is taupe paint on one eyebrow and white paint on my left elbow.

Now I'm thinking Adam must live some secret, transparent invisible bubble that no one, not even he is aware of because this man is immaculate from head to toe. Not a single drop of paint to be found on him. He could very well be approached to pose for a Irish Spring commercial, right there next to the paint chips. That kind of clean.

It was sometime around the 9th taupe paint chip when I hear an older man's voice call "Hey, Adam!" and I turn around to spot a man carrying a ladder, who turns out to be a co-worker of Adam's. He shakes the mans hand and turns to me and points out "This is my wife." As I shake the man's hand, Adam announces to him "AND SHE DOESN'T ALWAYS LOOK LIKE THIS".

If there was a 5 gallon bucket of sand nearby, I may have buried my head in it. I don't know who I felt worse for: me and the utter humiliation of the situation, or Adam, my continuously supportive husband who willingly takes me into public places, taupe painted eyebrow and all.

So dear friends and fellow readers, if you've been wondering where I've been and what I've been up to all these weeks, the answer is simple: Home Depot; Busy. We are jumping hurdles and running many late night marathons trying to get our little Cottage8 (the 8th house we bid on) ready and suitable for sharing with you. I never thought it would have taken this long, but I appreciate all of you that have stuck with us through the journey.

44 of you had this to say:

  2. I can not image you in anything less sophisticated than crispy laundered pajamas and your hair beautifully coiffed! For some reason you always have a mug of something yummy in your hand as you glide through your home.

My hubby is like Adam, never gets a drop of anything on his person, Ever. I, on the other hand, can't keep paint off my hair, me, and my clothes...I can SO relate to your humiliation!

    Sending shabby hugs,
    Melissa

  3. Can't wait to see the taupe you choose. These things are really important, to us woman anyway.. If you could have seen me picking a white for my furniture. . .yee gads! Finally cut it back to 5 I liked then picked "cottage white" of course. Behr paint and love it.

  4. Jennifer, Believe me--I KNOW EXACTLY where you are coming from! We've been remodeling this farmhouse for over 2 years now. One of my brothers jokingly says that I could have painted the entire place with an artists brush by now. My family thinks something is wrong if they see me in "street clothes". But, if I ever have to stop painting and "clean up" to run and get supplies, then the entire day is lost!! I have LOTS of remodeling pics of me still in my PJ's, mixmatched clothes, and paint all over my face and hair. Sometimes, you just gotta take one for the team! I can't wait to see your finished Cottage 8. You have been such an inspiration to me. Thanks!

  5. Hi Jennifer :)

Glad to hear there's more than one of us that goes to HD 400 times looking like a mess LOL

Try your best to enjoy the process :)

  6. I can soooo relate to this post!
My hubbie also looks good no matter what he is doing, he can be out in the beating sun and still come in with barely a drop of perspiration or dirt on him.
I on the other hand at times feel like the character from Charlie brown with a cloud of dust around me when im working!
I never do anything neatly. Especially cooking when I cook I tend to get things everywhere! so much so that my mother virtually forbids me to cook in her kitche...hee hee...
All I can say in our defense is that we sure clean up good!!
    smiles,
    Sandy
ps... Im dying to see the after pics of your house!!

  8. What is it with guys?
My sweety always looks perfect no matter what we have been doing.
Everyone can tell what I have been up to just by looking at whatever I have splattered on my face and on the front of my clothes.
    You know, gardening---mud
    baking----cake batter
    painting---well you get the point.
Happy painting! Can't wait to see
    #8!
    Hugs,
    Denise

  12. Oh, how funny is this! What a cute story! Hope you're having fun painting! It's my favorite thing to do...I wish I was only a hop, skip, and a jump away and I'd come help you out!

  13. Hilarious! My painting clothes are the same pants and shirt that I have been wearing to paint in for several years now--saved just for that purpose. And they are covered with paint.

The funny thing is that every time I wear them and someone sees me, they say, "Painting?" I mean, I'm standing there in the paint section, covered head to toe in paint with a handfull of paint chips...what else do they think I'm doing??? :-)

    Love your story!

    ~Angela :-)

  15. too funny!! I think many of us have that very same painting outfit. Mine has been worn down to the hardware store a few times too. Fortunatley most people are wearing the same outfit down there too! I'm half way through painting our huge front room so I do feel you pain!

  16. I had to giggle. I am so glad to hear I'm not the only one that wears pieces of my pajamas running to Home Depot or the Post Office, it's all the line of duty, right? And the she doesn't always look like this comment is priceless. We have all been there - I'm sure you were as cute as can be, Jennifer.

  18. It never fails, if I slip out of the house in the middle of a project because I am out of paint I will always run into someone I know. Murphy's Law...LOL!! Sometimes I dodge them and go the other way..oh I am bad!!

    Hugs,
    LeAnn:)

P.S. I am thinking Adam might need to get you a little gift for that one...LOL!

  20. Funny story!!! One day my grandson asked me "where you going grandma?" I was puzzled, (because I was painting) "Nowhere, why?" I replied. "Oh, I thought you were going somewhere all dressed up" "No baby I'm not dressed up". He was puzzled,"but your clothes don't have much paint on them". God love him. Keep up the good work I can't wait to see the finished cottage. Mary Ann

  21. Hi Jennifer!

I'm so glad you took a moment to do an update.....I'm dying to see Cottage #8! I laughed out loud reading your paint story. I can't tell you how many times I've been in that situation..in the midst of a project and needing something at the hardware store.......should I shower and make-up before I go....or should I just go "as is"....??? I've been caught in my paint duds MANY times!

Hope you take a moment to rest too..

    Blessings,
    Spencer

  22. Look at it this way, maybe your husbands friend thought YOU did all the work yourself and Adam was just there to pay for it. Maybe he wished he had a gung-ho wife that painted.
Send a gorgous picture of you to work with your husband

  23. Ah man you have always been a source of inspiration and now you tell me that you can still get into things you wore in High School. Does it ever end? lol
Hey If I could get into anything from High School I would be wearing it daily! Paint and everything.
Can't wait to see your cottage #8

  24. Jennifer,

I absolutely am screaming out loud at Adam's statement. I can just picture it too, you did such an amazing job of giving us a visual of Mr. Irish Spring.

All I can say is I can relate. I almost never go anywhere without overalls covered in paint, especially Home Depot!

I have been thinking of you and wondering how it's been going ~ now I know.

Your website looks lovely and is packed with great goodies.

Keep going girlfriend, you'll be finished soon.

    xo Cath

  25. So glad you're still alive! I was beginning to worry!

I painted the inside, highly pitched ceiling of my daughter's playhouse and I have white paint ALL over me this weekend. Then I had to go the the Home Depot to get more Ralph Lauren French Pink for the playhouse walls...what a sight! I'm just glad I was alone and no one recognized me!

    You poor thing!

  33. My husband and I flip houses as a side job and I SOOOOO know how much work goes into it. And the constant trips to the hardware store... yeah, those are a regular occurance for us as well.

  34. I burst out laughing, having been in nearly the exact same situation. Only my husband works at HD's HQ- which somehow made the situation even more embarrassing.

  35. There is no greater sense of joy than working on your own home, even when your muscles ache and you have paint splatters on your finger nails (been there)! Enjoy, these are good times indeed.

  40. Men...God love them...they really are clueless as to how to navigate around their women sometimes. What a hoot that story was!

My husband likes to pretend to peer at me through his beer glass, telling me I am getting "better and better looking". He thinks he's hysterically funny.

At least I think he's kidding...

I cannot wait to see your makeover. I feel like I am eagerly anticipating the birth of a child. I am sure it actually feels like labour to you...

I keep checking back. I am so excited!!

    Cheers,
    Linda

  41. Ahhh yes - painting. I hate picking out paint colors. I have a problem with it because no matter what color I go to get - somehow I end up brining home peach!

  42. I'm guessing that my husband would have pretended not to know me, I am a fright when I'm painting.
