My first, and what got me here in the first place

horses

My previous post really got me thinking about the whole blogging concept, and how I got here. What sort of events transpired before me to encourage me to share details my life with total unknown strangers (at the time of course. now we’re all like one big blogging family).

My First..

I remember my first, blog that is. HELLO my name is Heather’s blog. I can’t remember how I stumbled upon it, but it was about three years ago. I didn’t know what the heck a “blog” was. In fact, I remember Googling the definition of the word BLOG. I was amazed by Heather’s incredible photographs, her attention to detail, and her amazing craft projects. I then did what I like to call “falling down the rabbit hole” – clicking on every link, one site leading me to the next site, not knowing where I just came from or where I would click next. I was hooked. Big time.

Around that time, blogging was different from the way it is now, and for those that have been blogging for more than a few years, you might agree. There were very few decorating blogs around at the time. It was mostly what I like to refer to as “mommie blogs” that I was continually stumbling upon. Adam and I have no children, so these blogs could only hold my interest for so long. Yes, your kids are cute with their mouths stuffed full of french fries, but when my computer’s warming up and so is my brain, at 6 o’clock in the morning, I’m in the mood for something a little more subtle, thank you.

What made me do it..

Back in the day, I was primarily relying on automated newsletters as a vehicle to keep me in touch with my internet customers. Being the perfectionist that I am, creating each newsletter was a tedious three day task, as I’m a complete detail nut, with a dash of OCD and a good helping of ADD to boot. For me, taking three days out of my life for a newsletter that you would read in about three minutes just wasn’t adding up.

One thing that did make it worth it was my 90 year old Grandfather was one of my newsletter recipients, per his request. He would email me with each of my newsletters, joking that he would like to be one of my customers. It made my day every time.

One day, while pulling my hair out on a three day newsletter writing stint, it occurred to me that if I started a blog, I could use it to communicate with my customers and promote my products. I ignored the voice in my head that persisted “What if people don’t visit your blog.” “What if people don’t like what you have to say.” “What if you have nothing to say.”

Well, after three years of blogging I get more visits than I can shake a stick at. People haven’t thrown tomatoes at my head yet, so you must find me somewhat agreeable, if not just plain entertaining. And you can ask anyone that knows me, I never run out of things to say.

To my surprise, my blog has become a place where I share my journey, my home, and my life. I hardly ever promote my website, which was the original purpose of this blog (but if you want peruse my merchandise and shop a little, I certainly won’t stop you!).

So now it’s your turn! I want to know…What blog was your first to visit, and what inspired you to start your own blog?

(The beautiful image above was taken by a coworker of Adam’s. Her name is Tara, and she currently resides in Oklahoma)

I'm not sure which one was my first - I can remember several, Daisy Cottage, An Enchanted Cottage, My Romantic Home, Posy Gets Cozy and Cherry Hill Cottage. Like you, I couldn't believe what I was seeing and reading and I traveled from link to link, bookmarking favorite blogs. I lurked for a long time. Every once in a while I would tell my husband I was thinking of starting a blog. But it took several months until I finally clicked on "start your own blog" and did it. It has come a long way since then and I have learned so much, made so many wonderful friends. I am continually amazed by other bloggers and all the talent and creativity out there.

You know what's sad!? I cannot recall the first blog I read. I can recall that I started out featuring my stitching, but it has evolved into something much more for me. I still can't believe that I've met so many incredible people through blogging. And I have been so inspired by so many that I truly believe my life has been altered.

Actually, I think yours was one of the first. I got there through some site on e-bay. I don't remember which one but I, too, started clicking on the other sites and as you say the rest is history.
I even turned a friend of mine on to blogging, we both love shabby chic and pink and we've both continued to read. I now have a blog of my own, though not as successful as yours. I actually started bogging after encouragement from Cindy at My Romantic Home. Everyone is welcome to stop by for a visit.

I started out clicking on links from one blog and going on and on from there. Unfortunately, I can not remember that exact first one that had me surfing through blog land! I do know that I came across The Inspired Room and Nester as my first blogs that I just couldn't get enough of. Even today, I'll be on a blog, click on someone on their sidebar and take off again!

Hi Jennifer,
My first blog was Cherry Menlove's blog. I sat for hours reading her cozy posts about planning her wedding, recipes and life in England. I was enchanted and still am by Cherry's blog and her kindness in replies.

The reason I started my blog was because Fifi (O'Neill, of course!) told me to start one on her blog one day and things have never been the same!

When I did start that blog, your kindness was and still is amazing. That stands out in my mind and I thank you years later!

Love the part about your grandfather, what special memories for you.

I can't remember the first blog I read, but I'm sure it was about spirituality and/or politics back about 8 years ago...that's when I started blogging. In the time since then I've had 3 other blogs, and then the decorating blog which I started a couple months ago. I currently have the decor blog and a spirituality blog that I keep up with.

I enjoyed this post! You are so right - back just 3 or 4 years ago, there weren't really any decorating blogs as there are now. I started blogging back in 2002 - {just a family blog, nothing "decorating" related"}. But when we bought our house and started remodeling around 2004/2005, I decided to focus on just that - remodeling, decorating, etc. I remember searching HIGH and LOW on Google for other cottage style and decorating blogs and couldn't find any for the life of me. I know there had to be some out there at the time, of course, but I just couldn't find them. Now to my delight, there are cottage blogs o'plenty...so many that I can't keep up!

This is a great post! I can so relate to your own feelings. I started my blog in August and there is no doubt that Debbie @ Confessions of a Plate Addict and Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch are the reason I started to blog. I was so impressed with both of their blogs and the fact that both of them were so helpful and encouraging to me. I quickly found that this world of blog was amazing. It has given me new found energy and an opportunity to be share creativeness.

It was a frugal blog. I rarely went on the computer but that night I googled something and I stumbled upon a blog. I liked what I was reading and started clicking on stuff and reading more.

It was months before I started my own blog, which originally was supposed to be a frugal blog. It has totally changed direction and is a little bit of everything.

I have been blogging a year and just recently discovered decorating blogs, isn't that funny? Mine is not decorating, but I do love reading yours and others.

I'm not sure what blog was my first. Yours was probably one of the top 5 though!

I don't know what I enjoy more, reading blogs or doing my own. But I find I lose myself in reading others and spend less time on my own! LOL!

Thank you for bringing us your beautiful blog full of stunning photos and so much inspiration!

My first blog I stumbled across was the Twice Remembered Cottage. I just loved her sense of style and how she was decorating on a budget. I think my next was Dear Daisy Cottage and it took off from there. I gravitate to quilting blogs and decorating blogs and there is so much eye candy out there to feast on. I absolutely love what you've done in your new house. It's so updated and fresh while still looking "cottage".

I remember googling shabby chic decor and such and these blogs popped up. I started lurking your and My Romantic Home and a few others. That was it I was hooked. Then almost a year later I decided to try it.

Truth be know, Pioneer Woman got me hooked. I read her blog every single day. As a matter of fact she started my day. I found her honesty refreshing and her homelife welcoming. Just like sitting down with a friend. I started my blog ( http://happycottagequilter.blogspot.com/) because I wanted to journal my quilting experience, never thinking that anyone would read one little jot or tittle that I had to say. Amazingly, people read my blog and actually signed up as followers! My quilting blog would sometimes overflow with some of my thrifting to the point that I felt that I needed to have a separate blog. So I birthed a blog where I could share about my love of finding thifting treasures ( http://justalittlesouthernhospitality.blogspot.com/) I don't have nearly as many readers on JALSH, but it has been such an encouragement to have someone come and visit my little corner of the world. Okay, I have made this too long, but I just am so amazed at all of the wonderfully creative folks out there in blog land. And you are certainly one of them :-)

Actually, yours and Daisy Cottage were my first blogs to read. I too, did not know what a blog was, and I did the same thing you did, click from one to another. I knew I wanted to do blogging too, so I just started.
I am not the decorator, but I love to foof my hourse, and do crafting, repurposing, furniture painting, so those are the blogs I follow. I also wanted to share with others my love of the Lord, so much of what I write is about faith.
I still love your blog, and the cottage of the month. I think your house is georgous and I like your decorating style. I only wish I had that kind of talent.

Hi Jen,
I think your blog was the first one I visited. I didn't know what a blog was either.
I think I was looking at your website by chance.
Hope you are having a nice weekend.

I can't even remember which one I visited first. Maybe Daisy Cottage. But I was hooked from the get-go. I find that blogging is very therapeutic and keeps me on track in my life. Not to mention all the free eye candy!

Jennifer, What a great post. How interesting to read how you got started. My first blog I visited was the Boxwood Cottage, in Germany. I had no idea how I find it and was so afraid I would never find it again. Like everyone else I just started to click form one blog to the next. I had so many stored up in my bookmarks, it was fun. When I found your cottage of the month I truly felt like I was in Heaven. Thank-you for all of your hard work. I love all things pretty and was inspired and excited to see so many women have the same interest that I do. I do have to admit I wish I could shop more and decorate more but for the time being I'm content by looking at everybody's beautiful homes, and I'm looking forward to my next decorating project when ever it may be.
Hugs,
Ginger

hehehe... I think the whole blogging community knows why I started blogging now that they read my guest post at Daisy Cottage. I give Kim complete credit. No one can read her blog and not fall in love the minute the music starts. I found you through her and I still have a hard time waiting for you to post ;)

I'm not sure which blog was the first that I read, but I know yours was one of the first I became "addicted" to. There are so many that I read now, it seems crazy.

I began blogging nearly 3 years ago to replace the writing outlet I had as a journalist. I had left that job (and returned eventually) but the job I went to didn't fulfill the part of me that truly wanted to be a writer.

My old blog, Six in the Country, was never very popular, but it was a great learning tool. I realized that decorating was my favorite subject to write about, so I set out to make a new blog all about decorating on a budget - and it actually caught on! It's hard to believe the amount of "decorating" blogs that there are out there now. If there is a successful blog (such as your own) then you can be sure that there is TONS of time poured into it. I appreciate the time you put into it, and like others can't wait to read all your new adventures!

I can't remember which blog I first read although it probably was something doll related which is what I was into at the time. I've been blogging for almost five years now...hard to believe and in that time, my interests and blog posts have changed dramatically. My blog isn't well known or popular, but I love it and hope to be blogging for the next five years and beyond!

Hi Jennifer,
What a great question. Well it wasn't a blog but a cottage.I have always loved a cottage home and one day I went surfing the net for cottage homes and found "Chapman Cottage". One click lead to another link and so on, until I found blog-land. This lead me to you and many others blogger's, just by reading the blogs that I enjoyed I was inspired to start my own blog, at least give it a try and at best, I thought my computer skills would get better. I have been blogging for over a year now but not up to my 100th post yet. I really Love your blog and you have inspired me in so many ways.I think most of the blogger's truly enjoy sharing ideas about decorating, sewing and crafts and also sharing family life. I think blogging has taken over the saying "Pen Pal",instead of having a Pen Pal now we have blogging friends.
Jennifer, I must tell you that you are a delight and have worked so hard to make your blog a success, and still take the time to write back to everyone. Your Cottage of the Month feature is one of my favorite's that I look forward to reading. One day I will get the courage to send a few photos of your home for consideration for Cottage of the Month.
Blessings to you and your husband on Thanksgiving and always,
Have a wonderful day,
Elizabeth -(Home is Where the Heart is)

I started my blog in June 2005! I don't think there were many home/cottage type blogs around back then (if any?). I had only seen gardening and knitting blogs when I started mine. My first post was a picture of my living room/dining room. Luckily it looks a lot better now than it did back in 2005! I had no idea when I named my blog "Romantic Home" that someday it would be appropriate for the type of blog it has become! I didn't really do too much blogging for the first year or so but once I found more home blogs then I jumped right in! It's been a fun journey and one of the best things I've ever done! I love blogging!

Hi Jennifer...

I actually think your blog was one of the first I discovered.....through eBay...I was a long time stalker of everything you put on the net. Your pictures were always wonderful and I could never get enough... I'm so glad you decided to do the bloggy thing.

I think Daisy Cottage was my first and then Heather Bullard and then you! I remember thinking how wonderful to see pictures of the actual homes I read about in magazines. I have really enjoyed watching the process of cottage8. You should consider doing a book.
