Before and After – A Remodel in the Desert

We’ve been spending a good amount of time in Las Vegas recently, and for good reason. My parents just bought a vacation home there. My parents still live in the same house I grew up in, so purchasing a second home was a big step for them indeed.

Because we are all a 4 1/2 hour drive from Las Vegas, it was evident this move would require strategic planning and resourcing. And we are proud to say this was all completed in a matter of 4 loaded car trips by my folks, and 3 loaded car trips by Adam and myself.

Here is the exterior of their house. Because of the intense desert heat (it was 106 degrees there during our recent trip to Vegas two weeks ago) it is very common to see rock garden landscaping and drought-resistant plants and shrubs…

las9

Here is a before photo of the front entry and double-door office. This is exactly how the interior of the house looked the day they got the keys…

  2a

And this is how it looks now. The walls were painted Ralph Lauren’s Canvas Natural, and all the doors and trim were painted Behr’s Seaside Sand (just like our home). A built-in niche was added in the entry. The tile floors were steam cleaned and new carpet was installed.

2b

This is a before shot of the living room…

1a

And here is the after. They added the ceiling fan and chandelier, which came from local lighting stores. The white media unit against the wall came from IKEA. More details on that further down…

1b

Here is a before shot from inside the double-door office, looking out to the living room…

3a

And here is the after. The upholstered furniture came from local furniture stores, and the wood tables were a Craigs List find. The round wicker basket filled with balls and the accent pillows came from IKEA…

3b

Another before shot of the view from out of the double-door office, this time looking out into the dining area…

4a

Here is the after. My folks had wood plantation shutters installed on all of the windows throughout the house, except for the trio of small square windows above the cabinets in the kitchen. Those windows were accented with iron scroll pieces from Michaels….

4b

Here is a before shot of the kitchen…

5a

And here is the after. The cabinets were painted Behr’s Seaside Sand, and new hardware was added to all of the cabinets. They purchased a new black refrigerator for this space, and the barstools came from a local furniture store…

5b

Here is another angle of the kitchen, before

6a

And here is the after. Incase you were wondering, that door leads out to the laundry room/garage…

6b

This is a before shot from inside the kitchen, looking past the living room on the left…

7a

And here is the after

7b

Another view from inside the kitchen, before

8a

And here is the after. Most all the accessories seen here were purchased at Home Goods…

8b

This is a before shot of the guest bathroom…

9a

And here is the after. Much like the cabinets in the kitchen, the bathroom cabinets were painted Behr’s Seaside Sand. And the walls again, Ralph Lauren’s Canvas Natural…

9b

A before shot of the shower wall…

10a

And after. All accessories purchased from Home Goods…

10b

Now were are looking at a before shot of the master bedroom…

11a

And after. Here you can see what a difference the wooden plantation shutters really make. The iron quilt rack and green slipper chairs came from Home Goods. The iron accent table is from IKEA…

11b

Another before shot view of the bedroom…

12a

And here is the after. The bedding from JCPenney, and the lamps and twig bundle from Home Goods...

12b

Next is the guest bedroom. I don’t have any before shots of the guest bedroom, just after’s

las8

The wicker bedroom set came from a local estate sale, the bedding JCPenney, and the lamps and books from Home Goods…

   las7

My mom refers to this as the “black and white room”…

las6

Recognize the birdcages? They’re the same ones we used to have in our house. The leafy pillow is from IKEA…

las5

One more quick tidbit! That media unit from IKEA, with tons shelves to accessorize, I recommended that my mom purchase a set of Encyclopedia's to help fill out all those shelves…

las2

And it certainly did the trick…

las4

Thanks for joining along on this tour of my folks new desert home. I’m sure they would love to hear your thoughts!

7/14/10 – Updated to add: I’ve gotten several questions, so I thought I’d address them here…

  • This vacation home is located in Summerlin, Nevada with a beautiful view overlooking the entire Vegas Strip. My parents, as well as Adam and I, primarily reside in Southern California

  • A few of you mentioned a pool. In the community they live in, they are fortunate to have multiple community pools and club houses to choose from

  • The bedroom is actually not fully completed. We are still on the hunt for a dresser, hopefully country pine. A few of you asked about the bedding – it’s from JCPenney, but we cannot remember the name of the style of the bedding

  • Lots of comments about the painted cabinets. My parents hired a painter specially to do the cabinets. It is a very detailed process that involved sanding, priming, and several coats of paint.

  • A few of  you asked about the bird cages seen in the guest room. I used to carry them on my website, but I don’t carry them any longer

Lastly, on behalf of my parents, we wish to thank you for your kind comments and emails. My mom and dad are getting such joy from reading each and every one.

  8. I always enjoy seeing before and after pics of homes. What a wonderful job you all did on your parents Vegas vacation home. Love the colors you used. I am particularly interested in the painted cabinets in the kitchen. Did you all paint them yourselves or did you have them painted professionally? I've been wanting to paint my 30 yr old "Golden Oak" cabinets for a while now, but have been hesitant as I don't want to ruin them. Do you have any tips on doing this? Does the paint wear well?

I live in the desert of Southern California and we in the desert have to live and decorate a little different from all the frou frou you see in shabby chic. We love life to be carefree and easy and relaxing and not have to chase the broom and dustcloth all day. You did good!!!!!

  62. I stumbled upon your blog and this is the first post I read - love it! I've already bookmarked this site as I just bought my first home and am looking high and low for ideas!

Did that toilet paper holder/storage thing come from Homegoods? Does it clip onto the bowl or something?? I've never seen anything like that!

  63. It is a lovely home, think it just need to be a bit more cozy. It reminds me of a model house, that has no home feel to it. Even in a vacation house it should reflect their lives not just things bought to make the house look nice. No I am not a decorator, it is just my thoughts on what a home should feel like. I don't mean to bee crule, it is just my thoughts on the photos. Kathy

  69. What an amazing transformation. I love the color of the walls and cabinets...and I like the name of the paint too. We have the same oak wood cabinets throughout our four year old home and have plans to paint them white. To see what you did here is so helpful. We may have to go with that Seaside Sand too...it looks white, but is it a creamy white? And I like the hardware.

  70. WOW!! What a beautiful tribute to a lot of hard work - We are so happy that you finally bought your "DREAM" house in Vegas.

Sheila & Eddie have been watching the homes in Summerlin ever since the beginning...like 1988. This year their dream became a reality and we are so proud and happy for you. You are lucky to have Jennifer & Adam to help this dream come true. Many joyful years in your new Vegas home.

    We love you all!

  71. This just goes to show what can be done with elbow greese, a vision, keeping the expenses and lots of talent. This will be a wonderful vacation spot. I'm glad you answered about the cabinets being painted. I would love to do mine, but now I know not to tackle it myself, but hire a professional. It's worth the extra expense to get it done right. Good Job!!!

  72. What a wonderful transformation. Not at all like the typical "Southwest" home. *No offense to those with a Southwest decor - I've seen many, many stunning examples in that genre. But there's something to be said about exploring and finding a completely different look than one would expect for a particular region. Love the way the kitchen cabinets were done in white. It looks like an entirely different room.

Like many others who've commented, one of my favorite palettes is the "Black and White" room. I just adore all things toille! Touches of toille can be added into just about any decorating scheme, in any enviroment and look perfectly at home. Kudos to you and your parents for creating such a lovely, cozy space for the family to enjoy together. And thank you for sharing it. Peace, Martha
