Cottage of the Month October, and September too

Okay, so maybe I have been a little forgetful lately with my Cottage of the Month reminders, but secretly I think most of you have been marking your calendars and sharing it with your friends because the last couple of months have been very successful in terms of views. Thank you for that!

Monthly I receive feedback on the homes I feature and I wanted to briefly address that. While about 98% of the emails I get are very positive, telling me you’re loving the homes I feature, and I’m moving in the right direction, there is a small percentage that may have a difference of opinion. I try my best to line up my features to go with the seasons, and sometimes it works, and sometimes homeowners have to back out at the last minute for one reason or another and I have to quickly move to Plan B. I try to feature homes that are showing current trends in home decor, and I follow what’s being featured on blogs and in people’s homes. Creating this feature is a lot of work, for both me and the homeowners involved, and we appreciate you, our loyal followers.

That said, let’s move on, shall we? For the month of October, I featured the incredibly talented Lulu. We went to a Halloween party at her house last year, and her decor left me so speechless, I placed early dibs for featuring her home this year. If you haven’t already checked out her blog, please don’t hesitate a moment longer, you’ll thank me later.

Here are just a few pics from her feature. You can view the feature in its entirety here.

I love Lulu’s attention to detail, such as the moss and bird covered chandelier…

Anyone up for bobbing for apples?

Her faux mice are so cleverly placed among old books and framed photos…

Love her photography, and how she captures the light…

l25

You may want to bring along a snack next time you’re invited to dinner, seeing how the previous guests faired…

The unexpected elements and the arrangements in this photo make me come back to it again and again. Lulu is an amazing stylist.

Next I want to share with you a peek at September’s Cottage of the Month feature, when I featured Sara’s home. I’ve been a long time fan and admirer of Sara’s work and photography, and it was a real highlight to have the opportunity to feature her home.

I love how Sara displays her cherished collections…

s29

I am in love with the soft tones and warmth of this room…

s12

And how Sara beautifully captures that “lazy sunday afternoon” feel…

s28

I love that she chose to keep the hang tags on her little brooms she got from a flea market, and please don’t get me started on that fabulous old shoe rack…

s14

Notice the subtle stripes on the wall? Sara told me the previous homeowners had painted it, and so she acquired it along with the house. How lucky can one be!

  3. I wait with anticipation for each cottage of the month. I LOVE them. I cannot understand why anyone should post a negative comment to you. All the homes are gorgeous in their own way. I, for one, appreciate the work you put in and how gorgeous your blog is.

  4. From what I hear, all successful bloggers attract a small (hopefully!) element of negative comments. There are trolls out there and there are cranky people who are just moved to share their discontent with others. Some people love to spread sunshine and others gloom.

They are kind of like school bullies. Every school has them, but fortunately in blog land, they can be deleted! Please don't let them get you down. Just remove their remarks when you come across them. I think that there are even features that let you block specific people who regularly bother you.

September and October's homes look beautiful! I'm one of the ones who needs a reminder so I'm off to enjoy. Thank you for the hard work you do here.

  5. At the first of the month...it's the first place I go ;) This month you featured one of my all time favorite homes, particularly the kitchen. I'm fan of DustyLu's blog. I am a native Californian so I particularly enjoy seeing the local Ventura County Homes, but just love the Cottage of the Month page in general. It's truely the most well done home tour online to me.

  7. Hi Jennifer,
I saw both of these Cottage of the Month features and absolutely loved them, especially Lulu's!! I loved it so much that it inspired me to go out and get some Halloween decorations for my own home and do it up right this year. Thanks so much for the continual inspiration every month!!

  8. I'm one of those who are anxiously clicking on the first of the month to see the new featured cottage ! I love the series and thank you for doing it, I can just imagine it is a tremendous amount of work.

One question ..... so many of the houses are in California - is that because you live out there ? I'm a jersey girl in an 1850's victorian (www.thehouseonlavenderhill.blogspot.com) and I'd love to see some houses from out our way !

    thanks again,

    gena
