ThIrtysomethIng
I had a birthday this week. There wasn’t a cake, and there were no balloons. I tend to be a bit private about my birthday, only to announce it days after the fact. I’ve been this way most of my life. I guess I never want friends to feel obligated to pencil in their calendars and express mail me birthday cards. I spent my birthday doing a photo shoot with my friend Laurie for her upcoming Christmas Stocking line. She staged while I photographed. No obligation, no expectation, just two friends collaborating, creating and laughing. It was the best kind of day.
Thirty-nine. 39. Thirty9.
I can already tell this is going to be an interesting year. I’ve only felt this way once before, and that was on my 15th birthday. Knowing once I turned 16 and could legally drive, my world as I knew it was about to change forever. But 39? You have one foot firmly planted in your 30’s, with 40 tapping its boney finger on your shoulder, reminding you the next decade of your life is about to begin.
For the first time, I feel like a “thirtysomething”. Remember that tv show? I was a Sophomore in high school and used to watch that show religiously. I used it as my guide book to growing old. Yes, when you are 16, thirtysomething is very old. And yet, I don’t feel one ounce of old. Except for those few occasions when the grocery bagger at the market asks me “Need any help carrying our your bags, ma’am?” That’s when I feel the sudden urge to pull the baguette out of my cart and whap him over the head with it. “Ma’am” should be strictly reserved for little old grannies, period.
One of my favorite quotes, I think this sums it up perfectly:
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!’”
— Hunter S. Thompson

Happy belated b-day Jennifer, it sounds like you spent it exactly as desired.
ReplyDeleteI'm turning 47 on Saturday and my experience is that it only gets better. I mourned the passing of my youth when I turned 30 and I embraced every
year thereafter. You start to appreciate that wisdom only comes with age and, personally, I wouldn't trade wisdom for youth. I just want to grow old gracefully, that's all.
So ENJOY, it's a beautiful thing!
btw thank you for that AWESOME quote!
Happy birthday and I hope you enjoy the rest of your thirties!

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Jennifer.
ReplyDeleteI didn't freak out when I turned 30 or 40 (I'm 44). But 50 looming on the horizon seems a little scary. It really shouldn't because it's only a number!
Here's to a great 39th year.
Happy belated birthday! I remember when I turned 40 and then 50!!! I just celebrated my b'day last month and turned 59....I still can't believe it! I am a firm believe in your favorite quote and am living life to the hilt!
ReplyDeleteJudy
Happy Birthday. I still say that I am thirty something. Or maybe it is thirty and some months. lol Age is a matter of the calendar, not how you feel or who you are. I love your quote. Hope that's how you live. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteHa! How old is an old granny? I am 58 and I still object to be called maam!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a great day and you can't ask for better than that !
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy your thirty-something year !!!!!!! I'm 48 and 50 is definitely tapping me on the shoulder these days... I'll have to remember that quote more often !

Happy 39th! 40 was a biggie for me, but 50 was scary...now I'm over it. :) I still feel 40 so that's a good thing!

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Jennifer
ReplyDeleteOh I do love that quote and would love to have the courage to do so

We've come a long way baby! My mother retired from her retail job 2 years ago. She was 83 years old. My dad retired 20 years earlier, so he would fix dinner and clean the house while she was at work. They have been married almost 70 years! Doing what you love keeps you young. You should live a long life, your work is beautiful and inspiring to many people. We all look forward to your next Cottage of the month, and we dream of being the next feature. Your passion for life even shows in your own cottage 8, it's fun to watch the transformation as you work your magic. Happy Happy Birthday, and here's to many many more! Marcia@vintagefrenchhen
ReplyDeleteDear Jennifer! Happy 20+19 !! Enjoy every day of your beautiful life; I stopped counting the #'s and just celebrate the opportunity for a good slice of cake! Thanks for your many inspirations, your "young-at-heart" attitude will carry you through many many more birthdays!
ReplyDeleteHappy thirty ninth. I'm on my 21st 39th! It's been a great ride!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a ride indeed! I'm still thirty-something, it's easy, cuz it's my heart age! Happy Birthday! Hugs, Heidi
ReplyDeleteHappy Belated Birthday to you, Jennifer! Gosh...I wish I was 39 again......Hang on to your youth, girl! The years start going by so darned fast after a while.... :)

Happy Belated Birthday ! I know what you mean about the "maam" word. I am fifty-five years old and whenever someone calls me maam I look behind me to see who they are speaking too.
ReplyDeleteHappy Future! China has a great program for finding the missing pieces of your heart!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday
Happy belated birthday!!! The best way to spend any birthday is doing something that you love. Thirty-nine and even forty is still pretty young, my friend. I'm fifty-two and I feel a long way from being old. So take heart, you have lots of young years ahead of you!!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that quote! Hunter Thompson got it right on the nose!
Hugs, Cindy
Hi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to you young lady...age is only a number..
I'm shy too about my birthday..no fuss I say.
Sounds like your day was perfect and you did what you enjoy doing..
Here's to a great year ahead of you and may all your dreams come true...
Big hugs, Elizabeth XO
Happy Birthday. I just turned 38 - and some days I still don't feel like a grown up. It really is a journey, isn't it? I love that quote too!
ReplyDeletehappy belated birthday.. Unlike you, I want drums and whistles and gayly wrapped birthday presents, cake and ice cream and candles.. and lots of people fussing over me for my birthday. I kind of like that! lol. Ive never thought about doing it any other way. But I like how you discribed your special day. sounds quite perfect really. and the quote.. perfectly discribes how I feel about life!
ReplyDeletehave a great week
vivian
I remember my first Ma'am moment. It was when one of your teachers was younger than me. What a shock!! How could she be qualified to be your teacher, she was a baby herself.
ReplyDeleteYour heart is so "young", you will never be "old".
Please remember that wonderful quote the next time we book our next international trip : )
Thanks for keeping me so young~ Luv Momma
Happy Birthday! I celebrated my birthday on 10~10~10 and like to celebrate it all month long!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Happy Birthday! Happy happy Birthday! Happy Happy Birthday toooooo yoooouuuuu! Lulu
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Jennifer... :-)
ReplyDeleteMy Mum used to tell me you may look different, but you still feel exactly the same on the inside...the same things hurt your feelings, and you get excited just the same...and it's sooooo true. My daughter is 39 too... It's SOOOO young. I turned SIXTY in July and can hardly believe I'm THAT old.
Huggies,
Spencer
