Edited Monday, 11:30am PST: Last night and early this morning I was experiencing some issues with the quality of my photos, (blurry, dark and fuzzy), which hopefully is now corrected. We now return to our regularly scheduled program…
When I offer friends a tour of our home and introduce them to our “Master Bedroom” in reference to the main bedroom in our home, I think the term is almost embarrassingly overstated. It’s nothing more than a super tiny room that snuggly fits a queen sized bed. But as most small home homeowners will tell you, size really doesn’t always matter, and it’s what you do with the space that makes it a home. I personally find tiny rooms extremely charming as they seem to share a special kind of intimacy within.
When we purchased our home back in July 2008, it was evident that each room’s renovation was going to require the following: endless weekends full of projects, hard work and physical labor, countless trips to Home Depot, a massive amount of creativity, and a fully grown money tree in our backyard.
Fast forward to two years later, and while the only thing growing in our backyard may be weeds, our hard earned pennies and dedication that we’ve poured into this house is starting to show with each room we accomplish.
Some of you may remember when I shared the before photos of the main living part of our home a while back. If you haven’t seen it, then by all means please click here and here. I think it’s fair to say the previous home owners had a rather unusual affinity for sponge painting. Below is a photo of the entrance into our Master Bedroom, complete with sponge painted walls and a Superman sticker to the left side of the window. Not more than 5 minutes after we closed on the house, I rushed in here with a step stool and tore that thing down, can you blame me?
BEFORE:
And here is our Master Bedroom AFTER:
We’ve done so much in here, I’m not sure where to begin.
The walls are Ralph Lauren’s “Canvas Natural”, and the ceiling and trim is Behr’s “Seaside Sand”
(same paint colors as the rest of our house).
The tie top white linen curtains are called Belle and can be purchased here,
and the bamboo roman shade is called Providence, from Home Depot.
The quilt cover and duvet is from Macy’s Hotel Collection…
The bedside lamps are from Pier 1 Imports, the nightstands were flea market finds,
and the faux books are from a local shop…
The headboard is actually a mantel, a really huge fireplace mantel!
I found it on the side of someone’s house, paid them a hundred bucks for it, and painted and tufted it myself.
But I’ll save that story for another post, promise.
From left to right (below):
The sailor knot ball is from Home Goods, the antique hanging clock faces are from my friend Laurie,
the candlesticks are from Villeroy & Boch, the dark framed mirror is from Home Goods,
and the small mirror is an antique. The curious framed clock way on the left was a flea market find,
and the curly willow is from my friend Rosemary’s willow tree. She cuts it once a year, in January,
and I wait all year for her fresh cuttings!
This huge french linen pillow is from my friend Laurie…
Growing up in Southern California, my parents used to take us to Disneyland every year since we were very little,
and I remember posing for the silhouette artist that would cut your profile from small pieces of black paper
in a matter of minutes. Such an incredible art form, these paper silhouettes mesmerize me
and bring back the warmest of memories and good times.
Remember what I said earlier about the need for massive creativity,
well I made the closet privacy covers from shower curtains and curtain valences, no joke.
The previous owners were apparently quite attached to their doors,
because all of the closet doors were ripped out when we bought this house…
That branch reflection over the two layered mirrors is one of my favorite details…
In these past two years, I’ve learned a life full of lessons.
I think the most valuable thing I’ve taken away from this is it’s not going to be done in one day,
it might not be done in a month, and it may even take a year until you finally feel satisfied with the result.
It isn’t just about the destination, but the journey you take to get there.
Another quick before and after shot…

ReplyDeleteOh my dear Jennifer, where do I begin? It's breathtakingly lovely. What a beautiful sanctuary you have created for you and the Mr. and you are so right, the size doesn't matter. I am one of the people who have asked about your master bdrm and waited patiently to see it. And I am not disapointed in the least! I love it,it is so YOU! I adore all of your linens and window and closet treatments. Your decor around the room is so perfectly done. Decorating such a small space is a real challenge and you have met it beautifully!
ReplyDeleteI have a tiny master bdrm and I have wondered what to do with it, you have given me great inspiration, thank you SO much. I am ready to paint my headboard first, after that it should be easy, I think. Like you said though, it is a process, I'm ready to move on.
Thanks so much,
Love and hugs, Cindy

ReplyDeleteGood things come to those who wait. :) And yes, I agree - enjoying the journey is one of the best parts of remodeling!

As in everything you do, it is just beautiful. I have only one concern, and that is the mirrors above your head while you sleep. Are they secured in some way? I would be terrified an earthquake might make them fall, of course I am neurotic like that. Other than that, I absolutely love it!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I absolutely love it!! I love the idea of hanging the clock faces, so cute! It is very romantic in your master room and loving the mantel!!!
ReplyDeleteArlene: Thanks for pointing that out. I must confess, the mirrors were propped up onto the mantel specially for the photoshoot, and were pulled down right afterwards. On special occassions we pull them up there, but always take them down at night before sleep. Ouch!

Jennifer
I simply adore the mantle headboard. The tufting was genius! The bedroom is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteKaren
Mmmmmm....yummy! I could live in that room...no problem!
ReplyDelete**Tami
Like you, our "Master Bedroom" is very small just big enough for a queen bed, two side tables and an armoire and I love it. Your room is lovely and bright, So pretty!!
ReplyDeleteMCB
Jennifer, Your bedroom is beautiful and it was so worth the wait!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Sherry
I am in love, love, love with your bedroom. Well, your whole house really. I have borrowed your color pallete for my living room and may I also for my teeny tiny bedroom too?. Canvas Natural has to be the most perfect color. I love the mantel as a head board. I love the antique mirror behind the lamp. You have given me such inspriation for my next project. Thank You.
ReplyDeleteOh, Jennifer, it is so beautifully and dreamily done! As for the size - bigger is better is SO overrated! My tiny home is only 320 sq feet, the 'master bedroom' is 10 x 9 1/2, but it is so cozy!
ReplyDeleteYou can see it here, if you would like: http://minkeebabygifts.blogspot.com/p/our-cottages.html
So pretty - I love the color (or lack of). Well done!
Debra
Beautiful! I, too, have a small bedroom & it's wonderful to see such creativity in a small space. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteJennifer...I love it! Sooo fresh and beautiful. All the sweat equity you are putting in is reallly paying off!
ReplyDeleteThat super man sticker cracked me up. LOL I would have done the exact same thing...seconds after closing. :) Wonder why they took the doors...very odd. I like your solution...it actually looks a lot prettier than ole doors anyway! :) My house has been a "work in progress" for 20 years...and I still have so much to do! Never ending! :)
You are just a genius at your skill. Can you come to my house and re-do it all. My do you have talent. Amazing

It's flat out gorgeous! Neutral, but not at all boring. You did a fine job!
ReplyDeleteIt's the type of bedroom where I would love to kick my shoes off and jump on the bed! Beautiful job, Marcia
ReplyDeleteJust Gorgeous, you have done a beautiful job and well worth the wait to see. I love to see the difference in the befores and afters just amazing.
ReplyDeleteI adore everything! Thank you:D

ReplyDeleteJennifer, what an amazing job you did. You've got a great eye for decorating, and I'm so jealous!
ReplyDeleteI love the wall color--it's just what I've been wanting for when I repaint the guest room.

ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer! This is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!! Your patience (although it may have been forced) has certainly paid off! How fabulous it must be to go to bed each night and curl up in that big, puffy bed and look around at all the beauty.
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you,
Missy
Beautiful! What a transformation!
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteI am a first time visitor. I find it hard to believe that this house is the same house!!!!! This is the best makeover I have seen in all the many, many blogs I read!!! Well done! Standing O!
Shelley
I woke up in the middle of the night and got out of bed {granted I had two toddlers draped over me} because I couldn't stop thinking about how much I dislike our bed, our bedroom, and all the clutter that's accumulated in this space. And because procrastination is high on my list of traits, I've let my dreams of a lovely bedroom go. What are the chances that I found this post? Just the dose of inspiration I need to start putting some stuff away tonight, and taking a fresh look at this space, and the little people that share it with me each night. Thanks so much - your bedroom is heavenly!
ReplyDeleteOh this is fabulous! Magazine worth for sure! Love the way you used the clock faces!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Olivia
WOW! WOW! WOW! That's a transformation!
ReplyDeleteCheers
MAY DAYS
This is the most amazing transformation of space that I have ever seen and I am 69yrs old. It is absolutely breath taking! Your use of the mantel is unique and provides that all important focal point for your room plus a place to put your wonderful accessories. The use of the curtains on the closet doors are unique too. You simply did an amazing job! Give yourself a hug - you deserve it for creating such a warm and peaceful environment. I love it.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Connie
Jennifer - your bedroom is just stunning! Certainly worthy of being featured in a chic magazine! I made a fireplace mantel headboard like yours, but w/out the tufting. Love that idea, though! When you mentioned the silhouette pictures, it brought back memories of my own parents taking me to Disneyland as a child and having those silhouettes made.
ReplyDeleteI love the way you've merchandised the headboard with clock faces and the willow branch! Your bedding is very similar to mine (I used SSC white and oatmeal linen). Neutrals are oh so calming for a bedroom! :)
xoxo laurie
Your bedroom is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous and I'm so glad I saw this post because I have large windows like that throughout my house and desperately need shades! Thank you for sharing the details!

Stunning! Can you please share where you got the "shabby" embellishments on the headboard (or were they already there)? I'm sooooo inspired to make my own headboard this winter! Thank you for so generously sharing your wonderful ideas! LOVE your blog!
ReplyDeleteBEAUTIFUL!!! I just want to dive through my computer and set up camp in there! LOL...I think you did such a great job and I love every little detail!
ReplyDeleteJennifer,
ReplyDeleteWhat a transformation and you guys really did an amazing job---the mantle/headboard is so great and is an inspiration.
Thanks for sharing.

Oh my goodness. That is so pretty. I LOVE the headboard and the mirrors above it. You've completely inspired me!!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant headboard!!! Jennifer, your taste for color, style and design is hands down the very best! Thank you so much for sharing your connections for where to buy the pieces. I cannot begin to tell you just how much that I love this room! You have inspired me to redo ours! If only we didn't have five windows to cover!

I'm embarassed to say that my master is 25 x 15' with a sitting room. I really DISLIKE this room. I miss my small bedroom from our 1925 home! I feel so *swaddled* sleeping in a warm and cozy room. When I'm feeling sad, I go into my guest bedroom and relax in there!
ReplyDeleteLove your bedroom very much!
That is amazing!! I love everything you did in there. That is the same style that I'm shooting for in my master bedroom, but so often I get off track. Thanks for the visual reminder!
ReplyDeleteOh my it is soooo beautiful... Great job!! :O)
ReplyDeletethis is gorgeous! I love the way it turned out!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this bedroom, I am redoing my guest bedroom, and hope you don't mind but am going to try and make it to look like yours. love love love it!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat an beautifully cozy room. Id be looking forward to the end of each day just so I could get in there to relax!:) I have one of those old antique mirrors hanging right next to our bed too, seen here:(http://www.handbagsnpigtails.com/2012/03/musicalbeds.html). Id love to be able to find more of them.
ReplyDeleteAnd you've totally inspired me to remove the bottom drawer of my (also similar) nightstand. I found mine on the side of the road years ago. A neighbor had put it to the curb.
Lovely room!
Beautiful ~ love the headboard and all the accessories. We recently moved to a new city and purchased a small cottage. It's quite the undertaking but well worth it! You've done a wonderful job!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog last week. We (husband and four kids) purchased our house two and a half years ago. I've been struggling with ideas and inspiration and what to do with decorating. Because of your blog, I went to a local flea market I like and finally bought a large mantel I've been eyeballing for 6 months. I'm going to paint it white and dress our bedroom up with it. Thank you for the inspiration! I also am on the look out for a sideboard like yours....though I think if I want it, I'll have to DIY it.....can't find anything comparable. How did you build the sideboard? Were you able to find decent instructions or did you wing it? Thank you so much for posting all the beautiful pics!!
ReplyDeletejust super :))))
ReplyDeleteOh my what a lovely space. I love it.
