Grain Sack Purse Giveaway from 3 Fine Grains

It’s no secret I’m an avid fan of Kymberley Fraser from 3 Fine Grains. Kymberley’s authentic antique grain sack designs have received national press and are adored by many. She designs unique pillows and throws and recovers gorgeous chairs and ottomans from rare 100 year old grain sacks, creating one of a kind pieces for beautifying our spaces.

Kymberley has embarked on a new design concept. She is now making German grain sack bags, which she refers to as the “Alles Bag” (pronounced Alice). Alles means “everything” in German, the “everything bag”…

Holly from The Pink Rose Cottage

holly2

I am thrilled to have Holly from The Pink Rose Cottage join us here today. Holly has a beautiful website, and she is also the founding member and current President of the Vintage Tablecloth Lovers Club.

holly

Holly is a an avid collector of vintage tablecloths. She loves the colorful designs and the material, as they stand the test of time more then anything produced today. “Even though they’re homey”, says Holly, “Everyday pieces are my favorites. I also love fine linens, from Irish damask to Madeira to beautiful hand made embroidered pieces”.

h14

Holly’s newest love is vintage silver. “I love how you can have two different looks from on fine piece” says Holly. “Shiny for special occasions, Christmas for a more formal look, and tarnished. The beautiful dark patina is warm and cozy, and delightfully shabby chic”.

 Here’s a little Q & A session I had with Holly recently:

When did you begin your website?

I began my website about 2 years ago. Before then I sold on eBay for about 10 years.

h13

What types of items do you sell?

I sell mostly vintage and antique items. I sell only things that I would be happy to use and display in my own home. My taste is eclectic. I love things from the Victorian Era through the 1950’s. I do my best to blend the styles and make appealing vignettes. It’s my goal to offer interesting selections of items that appeal to a variety of tastes and styles. Sometimes this is easily done with the same piece, like vintage and antique silver.

The majority of silver I sell I polish before listing. It brings back the classic, formal design and sparkling look that is very appealing. In addition, it allows me to see any flaws and occasionally I find a little treat, like a monogram or hidden makers mark. Of course there are many that prefer the shabby, cozy look of tarnished silver. It’s an understated touch of elegance. So items that have a gorgeous, even patina are usually left as is. Silver is wonderfully diverse as it is interchangeable. Just takes either time or elbow grease to achieve that different look, letting the designer choose between shabby or shiny.

Also offered at The Pink Rose Cottage is hand painted china ~ delicate and beautiful little extras that add a softness to any room. There are teacups and teapots for that relaxing time of your day. Vanity items such as powder compacts, vanity jars, and vanity trays are useable and beautiful too. Kitchen items bring memories of grandma. There are cookie cutters, Post 86 Fiestaware, potholders and more. Holiday items from Easter to Christmas are always special and invoke memories.

I also sell one of my great loves, vintage linens! There is something so inviting and warm about linens. While some are formal and some are homey, they just bring charisma to any home and in any setting. Unless otherwise stated, my linens are soaked and hand washed before being offered on my site. They come to you fresh and ready to use. I take great care in preparing my linens. I used only the most careful method of cleaning and stain removal. No bleach or starch is ever used, so these wonderful pieces of history can last a long time.

I’m always looking for something different and unique to offer on my site. It’s the little extras that people add to there homes that make it so cottage cozy!

h7

Where do you find your items?

My favorite way to spend a weekend is treasure hunting. I love estate sales, yard sales, rummage sales and thrift stores. I love older items because charm and history is intertwined. I’ve made lots of contacts and friends during all my years of collecting and selling. This makes the “hunt” all the more fun!

          h11

What inspires you?

Each item I find is a treasure. I’m inspired when I hold an older, previously owned and used piece. I think about the women who have used it before, what their daily life was like, how they decorated their home, and if the piece made them smile as much as it does me.

While I love finding mint items, the used pieces have more of an essence, a history, a story we may never know. Not only is it a gift to our homes, it’s a gift to our imaginations!

Holly is also the founding member and current President of the Vintage Tablecloth Lovers Club, and here’s how she describes it…

We have the only searchable tablecloth database for tablecloth id. We have bi-weekly reports of current selling trends (both vintage tablecloths and vintage tea towels), an active chat board, and themed tables cape contests. It's a great group of collectors! Something about people who love to have beautiful linens and set an attractive table...Just the nicest, warmest, homey people! In the summer of 2002, a group of linen obsessed ladies formed The Vintage Tablecloth Lovers Club.  Each had been drawn together by their mutual love and appreciation for the vintage printed tablecloths of the 1930's-1960's.  As they shared their collections, they also shared their knowledge and realized that if they pooled their resources an important part of American history would be preserved. And thus the club was born!

After eight years we are still going strong. Promoting the education and appreciation of these textile treasures, we have a vibrant thriving membership that has fun sharing our unusual hobby and making friends that will last a lifetime. The VTLC provides numerous resources benefiting all types - from the casual hobbyist to the rabid collector.

We share everything from pictures of our collections to sales trends in the marketplace to articles researched and written by members.  A source of great pride for the club is our Tablecloth Identification Database (the only one of its kind on the web!) featuring over 500 tablecloths and counting! Compiled for members, by members, this invaluable resource is great for identifying a new cloth or just for paging through with a cup of tea! The club is non-profit.....and all fun! Our current membership is between 130 - 150 members.

Holly recently purchased many, many estate items that she’s still working on getting sorted and organized. There are lots of beautiful English teacups, vanity items, vintage jewelry, hand painted china, silver pieces, and linens of all kinds. You’ll want to keep an eye on her website for these treasures!

h12

Plus, Holly offers great tips on how to clean silver on her website.

I hope you’ll take a moment to visit Holly’s website, The Pink Rose Cottage, as well as her Blog.

Cottage of the Month October, and September too

Okay, so maybe I have been a little forgetful lately with my Cottage of the Month reminders, but secretly I think most of you have been marking your calendars and sharing it with your friends because the last couple of months have been very successful in terms of views. Thank you for that!

Monthly I receive feedback on the homes I feature and I wanted to briefly address that. While about 98% of the emails I get are very positive, telling me you’re loving the homes I feature, and I’m moving in the right direction, there is a small percentage that may have a difference of opinion. I try my best to line up my features to go with the seasons, and sometimes it works, and sometimes homeowners have to back out at the last minute for one reason or another and I have to quickly move to Plan B. I try to feature homes that are showing current trends in home decor, and I follow what’s being featured on blogs and in people’s homes. Creating this feature is a lot of work, for both me and the homeowners involved, and we appreciate you, our loyal followers.

That said, let’s move on, shall we? For the month of October, I featured the incredibly talented Lulu. We went to a Halloween party at her house last year, and her decor left me so speechless, I placed early dibs for featuring her home this year. If you haven’t already checked out her blog, please don’t hesitate a moment longer, you’ll thank me later.

Here are just a few pics from her feature. You can view the feature in its entirety here.

l1

I love Lulu’s attention to detail, such as the moss and bird covered chandelier…

l32

Anyone up for bobbing for apples?

l60

Her faux mice are so cleverly placed among old books and framed photos…

l44

Love her photography, and how she captures the light…

l25

You may want to bring along a snack next time you’re invited to dinner, seeing how the previous guests faired…

l18

The unexpected elements and the arrangements in this photo make me come back to it again and again. Lulu is an amazing stylist.

Next I want to share with you a peek at September’s Cottage of the Month feature, when I featured Sara’s home. I’ve been a long time fan and admirer of Sara’s work and photography, and it was a real highlight to have the opportunity to feature her home.

s1

I love how Sara displays her cherished collections…

s29

I am in love with the soft tones and warmth of this room…

s12

And how Sara beautifully captures that “lazy sunday afternoon” feel…

s28

I love that she chose to keep the hang tags on her little brooms she got from a flea market, and please don’t get me started on that fabulous old shoe rack…

s14

Notice the subtle stripes on the wall? Sara told me the previous homeowners had painted it, and so she acquired it along with the house. How lucky can one be!

ThIrtysomethIng

I had a birthday this week. There wasn’t a cake, and there were no balloons. I tend to be a bit private about my birthday, only to announce it days after the fact. I’ve been this way most of my life. I guess I never want friends to feel obligated to pencil in their calendars and express mail me birthday cards. I spent my birthday doing a photo shoot with my friend Laurie for her upcoming Christmas Stocking line. She staged while I photographed. No obligation, no expectation, just two friends collaborating, creating and laughing. It was the best kind of day.

Thirty-nine.  39.  Thirty9.

I can already tell this is going to be an interesting year. I’ve only felt this way once before, and that was on my 15th birthday. Knowing once I turned 16 and could legally drive, my world as I knew it was about to change forever. But 39? You have one foot firmly planted in your 30’s, with 40 tapping its boney finger on your shoulder, reminding you the next decade of your life is about to begin.

For the first time, I feel like a “thirtysomething”. Remember that tv show? I was a Sophomore in high school and used to watch that show religiously. I used it as my guide book to growing old. Yes, when you are 16, thirtysomething is very old. And yet, I don’t feel one ounce of old. Except for those few occasions when the grocery bagger at the market asks me “Need any help carrying our your bags, ma’am?” That’s when I feel the sudden urge to pull the baguette out of my cart and whap him over the head with it. “Ma’am” should be strictly reserved for little old grannies, period.

One of my favorite quotes, I think this sums it up perfectly:

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!’”
— Hunter S. Thompson
