I’m pretty sure a good number of you remember how this space looked the day we moved in. This is the view of our dining room, looking into our living room. And you probably remember that horrid cinder block wall which was the white (make that blue & yellow) elephant in the room…
Well, here’s how our non-cinderblock dining room wall looks today!
![]()
Before I get too far ahead of myself, perhaps I should show you how our dining room wall used to look, up until just recently. Remember the huge chalkboard I built out of plywood and fluted moulding and painted it with chalkboard paint? Well it was super cute and I enjoyed writing my favorite quotes and special menus for our guests, but a girl like me can get easily bored with decor and sometimes feels the need switch things up.
So I pulled out the huge chalk board and decided I was on the hunt for something with a little funk and character. It must have been my lucky day, because a local funky boutique was going out of business, and I found this unbelievably charming ladder…
![]()
And this super cute convex glass porthole mirror, both at the same boutique that was closing their doors. The mirror sits across the large window in our dining room, so it really captures the light and interestingly obscures the view with its fisheye glass reflection…
![]()
Since I seem to have an incurable addiction to old books, my new ladder accommodates them beautifully. By the way, don’t you just love the writing and the finish on this thing! Surprisingly, it is not old, and it was manufactured to look this way. I decided to look up the French quote that runs along the side of the ladder, and according to Google Translator, it reads “This is not a scale”. Okay. Not exactly what I was expecting, but whatever.
![]()
This old industrial chair is my next favorite addition to our dining room…
![]()
Not a repro, it is an old authentic one, the real deal. I bought it from my seamstress who had it for years just sitting in her sewing shop covered in drapery. And even after I handed her a sum of cash for it she still didn’t see or appreciate the value in it. But that’s not the first time someone’s scratched their head over my design motives…
![]()
While out at a flea market, I fell in love with these huge black beads strung on ribbon. I draped them across more of my old books. Easy and done.
![]()
So there you have it, our non-cinderblock dining room wall redo…
![]()
Although now I have an itch to erase this old quote off my chalkboard wall and write something else.
Any opinions on what I should write on here next? I’m open to suggestions!
Just for kicks, here is a look at all three sides of our non-cinderblock wall, which faces into both our living room and dining room spaces.

Love your space. I always crush over your big chunky shelves. fyi... the black beads are Kukui nuts that Hawaiians turn into leis for men. When we were in Maui, that is what our hotel gave my hubby upon arrival. Fun!
ReplyDeleteJennifer those are kukui nuts from Hawaii right? I wanted to get some of those when we were in hawaii but didn't get the chance, what a great way to display them! Love it all.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer,
ReplyDelete"Echelle" means "ladder". So the writing on your ladder says "This is not a ladder". lol. Something to ponder.
Claudia B. and L, I stand corrected! Thanks for letting me know it really says "ladder" and not "scale".
ReplyDeleteFarmhouse Mama and Kathy, thanks for letting me know about those curious black "beads". I adore them even more now.

Jennifer
Jennifer, your home is lovely and very inspiring - thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBev
Hmmm, Spring in Tuscany sounds nice - I could use some sunshine
ReplyDeleteOh, Jennifer, it looks amazing! You have such a great eye for these things. Just lovely.
ReplyDeleteI was going to say the beads looked like a "mala," or Buddhist prayer beads, but I think the other ladies are right and that they're Hawaiian kukui beads. Very cool!
My favorite thing of all, though, is the chair. I can't believe people don't see the beauty in things like that! Well, lucky for you, though, huh? Hee hee.
~Angela~
The funny thing about the ladder is that it appears to be a send-up of the famous Rene Magritte painting of a pipe that says "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" ("This is not a pipe"). Of course the painting is not a pipe, but an *image* of a pipe; although clearly your ladder is ... well ... a ladder, so I don't quite get it. But it's a great ladder regardless!
ReplyDeleteAlways been a huge fan of convex mirrors, but they are so hard to find in a non-Federal style, without the eagle on top. Love yours! Great score!
Best,
Kimberly
love the change! btw, we are in the early stages of doing a 'fire place mantle' head board for our bed, getting the idea from yours...can't wait til it's finished!
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteOh goodness - you did it again and created a stunning wall. I love everything that you create and think you should leave the quote as it seems to suit your creativity so well. My favorite quote is "Feel the fear and do it anyway".
Your style is so wonderful !
ReplyDeleteYour new additions to your dining room are perfect !
I found a quote on someones blog that I loved
laugh when you can,
apologize when you should,
and let go of what you can't change,
kiss slowly,forgive quickly,play hard,
take chances, give everything and have no regrets , LIFE is to short to be anything but HAPPY
Thank you for sharing your fabulous home !
That ladder...it was just made for your home...That wall looks fabulous.

Jennifer, you have done an amazing job with the transformation of your adorable cottage. You have the true gift of vision to be able to look at the "before" and envision the "after." Most people would have walked into your cottage and quickly walked right back out! Amazing! Thanks so much for sharing your pretty photos with us. Great post! :D
ReplyDeleteLove your wall! And here's a possible quote for your chalkboard: "Do not let the endless succession of small things crowd great ideals out of sight and out of mind." ~Charlotte Mason
ReplyDeleteAnd another of my Charlotte Mason favorites~ "I am, I can, I ought, I will."
Jennifer - I could stare at your home pics all day! Absolutely gorgeous :) Love that ladder and the french writing on the side....
ReplyDeleteI really miss your old Walt Disney quote....maybe you could put another one of his up (he had a few good ones).
"The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique."
Walt Disney
:) Happy Friday sweetie!

Hi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteLove the new re-do and totally can appreciate your story and feelings about your seamstress not fulling appreciating the value of something special they have. That is the exact purpose why we are here to aquire them and put display them like they should and deserve to be displayed!
On that note here is one of my favorite quotes for your chalkboard:
"Don't be afraid to go out on a limb......that's where all the fruit is!
Author: Unknown.
thanks for sharing your beautiful home and inspiration with us!
P.S. the Big Beads are Koa beads (Lei)from Hawaii (my birthplace). Very sacred for people of Hawaii and we display them proudly too and give them as gifts!
The quote on our chalkboard is: "I love paint the way most women love high heels" (my own saying ; o )
ReplyDeleteYour home is totally amazing. I love this most recent update!
ReplyDeleteanother beautiful zhush! just got my copy of fifi's book and there is your fabulous home to no surprise! you are such a talent, love it all!
ReplyDeletehugs,
shelley
Wow, I love that stool. Looks like it's in great shape too. The ladder looks so good there with the books on it. What did you do with the huge chalk board?
ReplyDeleteWow...Love it! Especially the chalkboard wall with the frame!
ReplyDeleteStunning Stunning, keep them coming. My tallented friend :-)
ReplyDeleteLove you
Little Laurie
You have such a great eye! I love your sense of style. You create beauty and then go back and make thoughtful changes and add amazing accessories that make the space even more beautiful. You are amazing and inspiring!
ReplyDeleteYour house has always and continues to be my source for inspiration. I mean your design/creativity always pulls me back to solid ground. Did I tell you I painted my living room Canvas Natural too. Thank you for a beautiful post.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer, It is hard to believe your beautiful home once looked like the before picture. It just keeps getting more gorgeous with every change.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Sherry
Beautiful, beautiful. Oh, and the big black beads are kukui nuts. You have yourself a kukui nut lei. : )
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer.....
ReplyDeleteAm loving every single inch of your lovely home. :-) You guys have done a wonderful job re-making it. Don'tcha wish the former owners would pop over and see the transformation. They wouldn't even believe it's the same house....particularly because that wavy paint job is missing.......Thank Gooooodness!
By the way.....Those big 'ol beads are kukui nuts.... They make leis out of them in Hawaii... :-)
Hugs to you!
Spencer
I love it!! My favorite is probably that chair though...I love all things slightly industrial {and old!}. :) I also like how you added a skirt to the table along the back wall...I think that adds a lot! Love your style.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! Your home is beautiful! I love what you did with your diningroom! That ladder is gorgeous! What a score!!!
ReplyDeleteWanna come over and redecorate for me????
Really beautiful job! Incidentally, Google translator is a little off, the word "echelle" means ladder in French. So the writing on your ladder says "This is not a ladder" - makes a little more sense now, don't you think? lol
ReplyDeleteCheers!
I do love that stool and understand completely..my neighbor always comes to my house and keeps asking why my frames are empty...
ReplyDeleteyes. those are Kukui nut leis...I used to have a tree in my yard and when the wind would blow it would make all kinds of racket on the tin roof...
love your style...
Came over from the Inspired Room, and I'm your newest follower. I love what you've done in your dining room, and I can't wait to take a look at the rest of your beautiful home :)
ReplyDeletegorgeous! What a transformation!!!

ReplyDeleteDefinitely a splendid transformation. Love your idea of having your fave quotes displayed...
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful room! What an amazing transformation and a lovely update! The beads are Kukui Nuts. I have a few strands from our last trip to Oahu. (It's pronounced coo coo ee.) Off to peek around your blog some more =)
ReplyDeleteHi! my suggestions for the 'new' quote:
ReplyDeleteI am an artist... I am here to live out loud.
or
The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work.
both by Emile Zola
or
Earth without Art is just "eh" ~unknown.
I love your style! xo
Hi Jennifer
ReplyDeleteYou have elegant flair for decoration.
just thought you might want to know, your ladder says "this is not a ladder". The word echelle in French is an antonyme.
So in your case, it's very true, the ladder is a book shelf and does not want to consider itself as a ladder. :-)
